Mia Nickell received her Master’s of Science in Medical Illustration from Augusta University in 2024. Previously, she obtained a BFA in science illustration and a minor in biological sciences from the University of Georgia in 2022.
Her undergraduate training solidified her desire to study medical illustration and created a foundation for expanding her skills as a visual communicator. For the past four years she exhibited in the annual juried Science and Medical Illustration Exhibition. She received the Logan Award of Excellence (2021) and an Award of Merit (2022) in science illustration. Some of her undergraduate work experience includes sculpting and 3D printing an insect model for an exhibit, “At War with Nature”, curated by the UGA Special Collections Library (2021-2022). Additionally, for her BFA senior thesis she collaborated with a private practice physical therapist to create scoliosis illustrations to serve as patient care visual aids.
As a student at Augusta University, Mia strived to refine her knowledge. She continually challenged herself, gaining extensive training in science, medicine, and visual communication. Many of her favorite experiences as a member of the MIGP class of 2024 was getting to learn alongside her new friends and to celebrate all their milestones small and large. Overall, her graduate training plus experiences during the two years, nurtured her enthusiasm for contributing to a community that bridges art and science.
When she is not chasing her passion for medical illustration, she finds joy in exploring the natural world, a variety of hobbies, and most of all spending quality time with loved ones. Currently, she is beginning her professional journey as a medical illustrator with S&A Medical Graphics, exploring Richmond, and hopeful for even more opportunities to continue creating communicative visuals!
Lastly, she would like to thank her family and friends for all their encouragement and support.
